A common misconception is that Hong Kong is merely a big city, whereas in fact it is actually an archipelago of around 235 islands. The city is commonly known as ‘crossroads of the world’ and a great mixing pot of Far-Eastern and Western cultures. Asia’s ‘World city’ has a unique history, including over 5,000 years of Chinese tradition and over 150 year of colonial rule, these diverse backgrounds make Hong Kong a unique place to both live and visit.
The Hong Kong region consists of four areas – Kowloon, Hong Kong Island, the New Territories and the Outlying Islands. Most locals live in the Kowloon District and there is much to see and do there. Hong Kong Island, claimed by the British in 1842, was given back in 1997, but the years of colonial rule changed Hong Kong from a cluster if fishing villages into a thriving international city. Reminders of its colonial past remain everywhere, not least in the architecture of downtown Hong Kong where the British style is still strikingly obvious. Today, Hong Kong is one of the most densely populated areas on the planet, with 7 million citizens populating the busy city.
Off the beaten track
When visiting a major city it is often difficult to get a true sense of the place and you can easily become trapped in the tourist bubble. At Wimdu we like to explore the very soul of a city, our accommodation rentals in Hong Kong tend to be in the less touristy areas of town. By taking a holiday apartment in these districts you can live amongst locals, rather than spending too much time in the tourists traps that are found around the world.
Hong Kong is an extremely safe city, which makes it the ideal city to go and explore off the beaten track discovering delight not usual detailed in guide book. A good example of this is on Hong Kong’s famed promenades. Whilst the Tsim Sha Tsui waterfront promenade will attract the most visitors, others promenades can offer even more impressive views of Hong Kong’s skyline. Wimdu recommends West Kowloon Waterfront Promenade or the stunningly designed Kwun Tong promenade.
Hong Kong International Airport is the main airport serving the city. Located to the West of Kowloon, the best way to travel to and from the airport is by taking the Airport Express train, just 24 minutes ride to the center of Kowloon. The city is very well connected internally, which means that the location of your holiday apartment is not restricted. Hong Kong has arguably the safest and most efficient public transport system in the world. An Octopus Card, similar to an oyster card in London, makes payment for transport quick and easy. The Fastest way to travel round is the city’s metro system (MTR). There are lots of ferries connecting Kowloon with Hong Kong Island and the Outlying Islands. For those with more time the most pleasant way to journey around is by ferry, tram or for the more active, bike. These three options allow you to soak up more of the city as you travel round.
